"No more giving carte blanche" to ArcelorMittal management, declared CFDT coordinator Jean-Marc Vecrin on Thursday, May 15, on franceinfo. The steelmaker's employee representative is demanding "explanations" after the group's intention, made public on Thursday, to build its first electric furnace at the Dunkirk site in the North, operational by the end of 2028. The project is estimated to cost €1.2 billion, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
These investments, however, are conditional on European arbitration. ArcelorMittal wants the EU to limit the share of steel imports into the European market to 15% and also request adjustments to the carbon quota system.
"There are too many gray areas regarding financing," regrets the union representative, who says he wants to "keep up the pressure" regarding the announced elimination of 636 jobs in France, half of which are in Dunkirk . ArcelorMittal management, for its part, indicates that investments in the Dunkirk site will be confirmed "after the summer."
